No clinking allowed
by ozziepost inwith the weekend almost upon us, thoughts may be going to those pleasant social gatherings where you might like to share a drink with friends.
i was reminded of the "no clinking" rule last night when at a gathering i met up with a couple of former bethelites.
we, my daughter, the couple and myself took glasses of champagne in hand and the ladies were about to clink glasses when they halted.

Another example about how the myriad of silly little rules stifles spontaneous intrapersonal expressions of friendship, not to mention how they trivialize the notion of God by depicting him as a petty tyrant who frets over such inconsequential details.

WTBTS Innocent in Swaggart Case?
by troubled inawhile back, i saw information on another web site about the wtbts's involvement with the swaggart case.
the information was presented in a way that depicted the wtbts as involved with the swaggart case and, therefore, false religion.. at first, i was shocked.
however, i did some research on what an amicus curie is.

Troubled,
I think you're missing the point on this one. Legal semantics aside, there's no question that in the public's mind -- and especially in the minds of loyal JWs -- the Society decided that the risk of an appearance of being tainted by an alliance with Swaggart was worth it when it came time to defend their revenue stream from taxation.
Let's not forget that these are the same people that go to such lengths as to refuse to have their Kingdom Hall addresses appear in local newspapers and Yellow Pages under ``Religious Services'' and who've nailed people to the wall for such trivialities as swimming in a YMCA pool, who cut the lawns of churches as part of their job for landscapers, or who monitor the securty equipment of churches. -

Loyal ones close to apostasy?
by ozziepost insince all baptised jehovah's witnesses are required to give loyal obedience to the watch tower society or f&ds, it's necessary to accept all the teachings of the organisation.. next time you're challenged by an elder as to whether you accept all the teachings of the organisation, you might like to refer him to page 262 of the daniel book.. there the "ships of kittim" are 'identified' as the ships of britain lying off the western coast of europe in ww1.
kittim is believed to be the ancient name of cyprus.
in the first world war cyprus was annexed by britain.

Hi Amazing,
Your reference to WT literature as comic book stuff is apt. Have you notice, that in common with Batman, Superman, Marvel Comics,
how they overuse the exclamation points? BAM!! SHAZAM!! -

by biblexaminer inthere is a "brother" in our hall, or rather ..there was a "brother", or more exactly, there was a guy who was studying hard and was already being called "brother" but who was not yet baptised, ...in our hall, who is mr. internet guru.
this guy lives and breathes internet... it's his job.. anyway, every meeting i went to, and saw this guy still warming his chair, was a surprise to me.
i would go to the hall and on the way in i would ask myself "is he still going?

Hi Examiner,
How's the book study going? My sympathies. I've been in and around the Borg for more than 40 years, and I can't recall the JWs having ever succeded in ``reactivating'' someone once they were made privy to the inner workings and the Society's unvarnished history. Any such confirmed ``restoration to one's sense'' would,I'm sure, have been loudly trumpet in print and on assembly programs.
In fact, it's far more likely that, in the attempt to do so, the sincere but uninformed JW would be ``blindsided;'' woefully unprepared to deal with the barrage of hard but fair questions raised by the strayed sheep, and seriously disquieted by the experience. -

Right on Meta,
And what are we supposed to make of these interesting little ``experiences'' that relate how the local KH was the only building unharmed by some natural disaster, or how the faithful brothers' lives were spared by their attendance at a meeting during a calamitous storm which destroyed their homes?
They are the prototypicaL ``Spin Doctors;'' skilled practitioners of the art long before the phrase was coined. -

The WT leadership sends conflicyting msgs on this subject. On the on hand, with items such as the KM article Metatron describes, they acknowledge and lip-serve the principle of befriending one another.
But from the other side of their mouths, they stress that the Kingdom Hall is not to be used for any social purpose whatsover, that announcments of congregation picnics, etc., not be made from the platform. I often thought how advantaeous it might be if the local dubs would have a Sunday meal (ala the Baptists in their church cellar, heaven forbid!) or a picnic.
I often pointed out that the Kingdom Hall was underutilized as an asset, and should be used as a sort of community center for the dubs. Needless to say, that idea either fell on deaf ears or met with scorn.
Then too, there's the paranoid harping about ``watch your associations, even inside the congregation.'' Certainly, that's hardly conducive to developing congregational warmth and conviviality, as it makes people needlessly suspicious, looking askance at others. And if the strong only seek out the strong as friends, who's going to inspire the weak by offering an unconditional hand of friendship? -

Hi all,
I think maybe that thinking about religion, or maybe its' beter to say, about spirituality in terms of ``right'' and ``wrong'' misses the point. It's my contention that JWs, in common with all other organized religions, are right about some things, wrong about others, beter in som respectsd, worse in others.
What really matters is whether our belief system inspires us to sanctify life and to deal generously and compassionately with other creatures, helps us come to grips with the mystery of just where we all fit in, and reassaures us that the good feeling we get from doing good to others is reward enough.
